Crew Advancement Program (Cap)
The “Crew Advancement Program” is designed to give the entry level mariner a clear path in advancement within the maritime industry. The program gives the mariner both the skills and education while obtaining the necessary qualifications to earn a U.S. Coast Guard Mate’s license for service on vessels of 500/1600 gross registered tons. In partnership with AMU, prospective students can also earn an accredited Associates Degree in General Studies.
The “Crew Advancement Program” prepares students specifically for their onboard responsibilities as an officer in the Merchant Marine and also for the United States Coast Guard license examination. The core courses provide a broad marine-oriented education to produce a well-trained and informed ship’s officer. This course of study includes general as well as specific maritime subjects which will familiarize the student in all aspects of vessel operations.
The program is designed to allow mariners to continue to work and take classes around their work schedule.
The modular course format allows greater flexibility and is an innovative approach to education. The program also involves the completion of underway sea projects which will direct students into completing assigned tasks and assignments in a comprehensive and logical manner. The program has been approved by the United States Coast Guard and is designed to meet the Standards of Training and Certification of Watchkeeping (STCW) required by the United States as party to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Mission
One of the top missions of the Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS) is to consistently provide the Workboat Industry operators and mariners the highest level of mariner training available.
Commitment
Through GMATS education, waterfront resources, and cadre of seasoned seamanship and navigation instructors, GMATS will continue to provide a dynamic and quality educational program to provide the deckhand a strong foundation in their future career as a deck officer.
Goal
The goal is to provide candidates a well-rounded education in Nautical Science and advance them to become well qualified ship’s officers. A deckhand taking advantage of the opportunity to advance his education and license will produce a more professional mate with advanced working knowledge and better rounded skills. In today’s society a college degree is often perceived as a requirement for professional success.
Giving students the ability to apply professional courses towards a degree provides significant tangible and intangible benefits. The goal of the Crew Advancement Program is not only to prepare someone to pass the license exam but to give them an education which will last a life-time.
