Research & Special Projects
In addition to its education and training programs, GMATS, through its Division of Research and Special Projects, conducts applied research and specialized studies; performs operational assessments and process improvement activities; and provides a wide range of technical assistance and instructional services. Focus areas include:

- Marine engineering, shipbuilding, and naval architecture
- Security – seaport, marine terminal, intermodal cargo, and vessel
- Workforce development – maritime training and education for seagoing and shoreside personnel

GMATS holds designation as a National Maritime Enhancement Institute (NMEI) by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) of the United States Department of Transportation. GMATS designation as an NMEI recognizes GMATS’ accomplished expertise, research and educational capabilities, and industry affiliations which contribute to the advancement of marine and intermodal transportation systems that are safe, secure, economically viable, and environmentally sensible.
