GMATS Staff Meet with Army - Fort Totten and NYC Fire Department
The Director and Military Affairs Program Manager have made two site visits to Fort Totten to meet with Facilities Management and NYC Fire Department representatives. GMATS is working to secure a new lodging location for GMATS students.

GMATS gets Academy one-step closer to AWS Certification
The Academy’s welding instructor Joe Kass was sent by GMATS to become AWS (American Welding Society) Certified. This is the last step before submitting an approval package for the Academy’s welding laboratory to become AWS certified.
GMATS to Work with Santa Fe International:
GMATS has agreed to develop course outlines, correspondence courses, and 4 one-month courses including: Basic Marine Operations, Advanced Marine Operations, Mechanics, and Electricity. GMATS also has agreed to run 18 of these classes starting in January 2002 for Santa Fe.. (Santa Fe International Corporation is a leading international offshore and land contract driller based in Dallas Texas. The Company owns and operates a high quality, technologically advanced fleet of 26 marine drilling rigs and 31 land drilling rigs in 15 countries throughout the world and is a provider of drilling related services to the petroleum industry.)
New Master’s Degree Program
As of June 2001, American Military University (AMU) (a GMATS partner) now offers a Masters of Arts in Management, with a concentration in Maritime Engineering. This is a 36-credit degree program with 9 credits available through GMATS Engineering courses. (GMATS also has a cooperative Masters program in Transportation.) New Administrative Offices for the Marine Engineering Division:
Due to the increase in the number of staff, the GMATS Marine Engineering Division will be moving to new offices adjacent to Samuels Hall. The space is currently being renovated and will be able to accommodate seven people.
Marine Engineering Division Welcomes New Employee:
The Division welcomes its newest employee, Carmela Sacco.

Timothy Adams Joins Staff
Mr. Timothy Adams joined the Division staff at the beginning of July as a new Program Manager. Mr. Adams is a graduate of the Kings Point and he brings marine terminal operations experience to GMATS. Mr. Adams will oversee curriculum and course management of programs in areas of logistics and supply chain management; intermodal freight transportation systems; and seaport and terminal operations. Welcome aboard!
Second Ship Chartering and Brokerage Course Held in Washington DC for MSC
The Division conducted a second program focusing on the fundamentals of chartering and brokerage for the Military Sealift Command (MSC). The three-day program was held at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington DC in mid-July.
GMATS Hosts Follow-up Seminar to Ocean Transportation Research Project
In July, GMATS held a seminar that provided details on GMATS recently completed research project - “A Regional Intermodal Freight Transportation Study (RIFTS)” which focused on ocean liner container transportation and port infrastructure in Asia and the Middle East. APL provided key sponsorship for the initial RIFTS and sent two (2) senior representatives from Asia to serve as panelists in a two-day follow-up seminar held at the Academy in July. CSX World Terminals, ocean carriers internet portal GT Nexus, and North River Consulting Group also participated.
Chinese Ministry of Communications Official Visits Academy
GMATS recently served as host for Mr. Li Jiansheng who is the Executive Director for International Cooperation in the General Office of the Department of Water Transport for the Chinese Ministry of Communications. Mr. Li Jiansheng met with GMATS staff and Academy faculty and was provided a campus tour and briefings on the Academy’s undergraduate program and the GMATS. His visit was facilitated through a direct request to the GMATS from the U.S. State Department’s International Visitors Program.
Senate Bill aimed at Creating a Security Institute at GMATS
In late July a proposed maritime security bill sponsored by Senators Hollings and Graham cleared the Senate Commerce Committee. The bill is aimed at improving maritime security in U.S. ports and in ports around the world that serve U.S. interests. Among other items listed in the extensive bill, the bill states the following: “The Secretary shall establish the Maritime Security Institute at the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s Global Maritime and Transportation School to train and certify maritime security professionals in accordance with internationally recognized law enforcement standards.” The bill is scheduled for a Senate vote in the fall. If the bill becomes law, the Maritime Security Institute will be managed by the GMATS Division of Transportation, Logistics, and Management.
