DETAILS Outreach and Other NewsLocation of GMATS Advisory Board Meeting Changed to Kings Point The next GMATS Advisory Board Meeting is still scheduled for Wednesday evening, November 28th and Thursday morning, November 29th. However, the location of the meeting (including the dinner and reception) has been changed to Kings Point. GMATS had originally planned to hold the meeting in the San Francisco Bay area in California.
Nautical Science and Military Affairs DivisionFort Totten Lodging Talks Continue GMATS staff continues to meet with Army and New York City Fire Department personnel at Fort Totten. The goal of these discussions is to gain access to temporary lodging for GMATS students and/or faculty and staff residence facilities. This initiative would augment existing on-campus GMATS student accommodations with near campus (i.e. Fort Totten) facilities and perhaps make available a limited number of permanent residences for use by Academy faculty and staff. To accommodate staff growth, the Division is preparing to reorganize the layout of its existing office spaces. With the expected arrival of cubicle-style desk units in early September and subsequent new office floor layout, the Division spaces will be able to accommodate seven (7) personnel.
Marine Engineering DivisionDivision Staff Travel to Oil Rig In conjunction with the training programs being developed for Sante Fe International, a team from GMATS conducted a site visit aboard a jack-up oil rig located off the coast of Nova Scotia. The purpose of the trip was to provide staff and faculty with a better understanding of rig operations, equipment, and individual employees’ job responsibilities in this unique operating environment. New Engineering Office Construction Construction of the new marine engineering administrative office spaces was underway during the month of August. The new office should be completed and ready for move-in by the beginning of September.
Transportation, Logistics, and Maritime Business DivisionGMATS Set to Host Corporate Leadership Retreat for MasterCard International In the coming months, GMATS is scheduled to conduct a corporate leadership retreat for a group of twenty (20) professionals from MasterCard International. Using the superb leadership expertise and laboratory resources at the USMMA (the same founding elements used for over fifty (50) years by the Academy’s undergraduate program in producing leaders for the military and transportation industry), GMATS will coordinate this pioneering retreat. The event includes executive leadership presentations; pragmatic, experiential exercises; keynote speeches; and other activities fully utilizing the unique collegiate, service academy, and waterfront environment at Kings Point.Second Annual Port Facilities Tour for AIMU The Division co-sponsored a one-day tour of the Academy, Port of New York/New Jersey marine transportation facilities, and an Atlantic Container Lines (ACL) vessel for over one hundred (100) American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU) - marine insurance industry professionals. The group departed Pier 11 in lower Manhattan aboard a New York Fast Ferry and headed to Kings Point via the East River. Upon arrival at the Academy the participants toured the campus, visited the American Merchant Marine Museum, and were given a demonstration of the Academy’s state-of-the-art navigation bridge simulator. Departing the Academy, the high speed ferry transited the East River, across Upper New York Bay, and into Newark Bay - Port Elizabeth. The ferry docked at Maher Terminals and AIMU member participants boarded the “Atlantic Companion” a combination RORO/container ship. ACL representatives provided a comprehensive tour of the vessel’s cargo holds, bridge, and accommodation spaces. Following the ship visit, the ferry returned to Pier 11 in Manhattan where participants then boarded the sailing vessel “Peking” located at South Street Seaport for a fine reception hosted by Thacher, Proffitt, and Wood, a law firm based in New York. GMATS and AIMU to Jointly Offer Courses for Insurance Professionals Division personnel recently met with AIMU staff to conclude development plans wherein GMATS/AIMU would jointly offer programs in marine insurance for industry professionals. Courses focusing on current practices in hull and machinery, protection and indemnity, and cargo insurance will be held at AIMU’s offices in lower Manhattan, GMATS facilities at Kings Point, and/or other off-site locations. Macau Maritime Administrator Visits Academy Ms. Susana Wong, who serves as the Director of the Maritime Administration for the Macau Government, recently visited the Academy as part of the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Program. Her specific areas of interest during her two-week visit to the United States included flag-state registration and administration, merchant shipping policy, maritime safety, marine environmental issues, maritime training, and management of maritime museums. During her brief stay, Ms. Wong met with various Academy faculty and staff including GMATS and American Merchant Marine Museum representatives. President of Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay Visits Academy Dennis Rochford, President of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay, attended briefings on the Academy’s undergraduate program and GMATS during a one-day visit to Kings Point. Meetings and discussions with key staff focused on establishing closer ties between the Academy community and Maritime Exchange member companies.
